Overview

If a student does not currently meet the entry requirements for the University of Alberta Year One Foundation Program, they may be eligible to join the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. The program provides the support needed to improve English language proficiency and academic skills before joining the University of Alberta community. The University of Alberta’s EAP program helps students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Instruction is delivered by U of A instructors at the English Language School, using an active, student-centred approach. Upon completing the program, students become eligible for admission to the Year One Foundation Program, which represents the first year of a four-year bachelor’s degree. Depending on their English language level, students are enrolled in the EAP program for four to eight months. A closer look at the U of A’s EAP program: There are two course options available, depending on a student’s current English language level. Option 1: EAP 135 This is a two-month program offered in November, March, and July, with progression to the EAP 136 course. Students receive 16.25 hours of instruction per week, with 18 students per class. Option 2: EAP 136 This is a four-month program offered in September, January, and May. Orientation is scheduled during the first week of classes. Students receive 20 hours of instruction per week, with 18 students per class. Classes take place Monday through Friday as lecture hours, with a seminar scheduled on Wednesdays.
