Overview

The University of Guelph’s Master of Capacity Development and Extension (MCDE) is a flexible, course-based program designed for individuals seeking to make a difference in local and international communities through leadership, communication, and engagement. As a non-thesis program, it equips graduates with the skills to create change, promote social justice, advance environmental solutions, inform stakeholders, and strengthen communities. Rooted in agricultural and rural development, the program welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds, including the natural and social sciences. The course-based option emphasizes professional development within a collaborative learning environment. Shared decision-making, open communication, respect for differences, and a commitment to conflict management are central to the program’s approach. With a 60-year legacy in rural extension and education, the MCDE provides experiential learning opportunities through internships and field courses. Students benefit from the guidance of expert faculty while engaging with communities in Canada and internationally. By integrating the natural and social sciences with a range of subject areas, the program prepares graduates to become holistic leaders capable of responding to community needs comprehensively and thoughtfully.
