About Lakehead University

Lakehead University is small enough to offer the personalized approach to supports and education that allows students to thrive. And they're big enough to embody a truly global perspective. Over 1,600 international students, representing over 80 nations around the world, call Lakehead U home.

Dynamic, modern, and highly learner-centred, Lakehead acknowledges all of their students as valued leaders of tomorrow, whose education and success are most paramount to their institution. Both campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia promise the total university experience: a blend of academic excellence and opportunity with a rich variety of social and recreational activities. They also promise excellence in research; Lakehead is the proud host to ten Canada Research Chairs and revolutionary facilities such as the world-renowned Paleo-DNA Laboratory and their Biorefining Research Institute.

The Barrie STEM Hub is under construction at 24 Maple Avenue in Barrie's waterfront district, opening in fall 2026. The facility is located steps from the lake and within an active, walkable neighbourhood with everyday conveniences and strong local transit. GO Transit links connect Barrie to communities across the Greater Toronto Area, offering students broader mobility when needed.

Just 30 minutes from Lakehead's Orillia campus, STEM Hub students can also take advantage of additional services, events, activities, and athletics there.

Inside, the Hub will offer a modern, high-tech environment designed for hands-on learning and applied research.

Facilities include:

Specialized laboratories will support both teaching and research in STEM fields, including:

The Hub will share its building with a Regional Innovation Centre that supports Ontario entrepreneurs and innovators—creating a space where students, faculty, and industry partners can collaborate on real-world challenges and bring new ideas to life.

Post-study work information

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Graduating from a designated learning institution does not automatically make a student eligible for a PGWP; not every program at a DLI qualifies, and eligibility can depend on the program, language results, field of study and other requirements.
