Overview

Students will engage with questions fundamental to the academic study of politics and power relationships; questions that will expose them to multiple perspectives on the most consequential, often controversial, issues of the times: war and peace, democracy and the rule of law, global capital, human rights, the environment and more. As students develop and refine their critical-thinking skills, they will be able to better interpret their experience of the world. Students will learn: Through the course work, they will understand the inner workings of governance: the political structures, institutions, processes, cultures and policies within and across nations, and how they shape—and are shaped by—political actors. From Machiavelli and Hobbes to the Transcendentalists, Marx and 20th-century thinkers, they will evaluate complex theories and texts as part of developing valuable research skills. And they will develop persuasive arguments of their own, defending them with sound evidence.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
