Overview

Along with either majoring or minoring in German, students can choose a track that focuses on the acquisition of German language and business skills. they will also call on-campus I-Space home for one semester, where they will practice daily their German outside of class in preparation for an inspiring off-campus semester in a German-speaking environment. Students who bring German language skills with them to Albion College, and who successfully complete an interview with a professor, may choose a “fast track” language program at an approved summer institution domestically or language/internship program abroad during the summer after their first year. Students will learn: First- and second-year courses focus on acquiring a basic proficiency in the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – while providing a foundational understanding of how language and culture are interwoven in effective interpersonal communication. Upper-level courses focus on both past and present, from the Enlightenment (late 18th century) to the first German nation-state in 1871 and WW I, the Weimar Republic, and from World War I to today’s 21st-century Germany. Their intent is to provide students with a greater understanding of multicultural issues as well as an awareness of German literary and social history.
