Overview

The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence with Foundation Year is designed to address the growing demand for advanced AI skills across global industries, equipping students with expertise in areas such as deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, cloud computing, and generative AI. The course prepares students to develop intelligent software solutions that drive innovation and support the future of the digital economy. Delivered over four years, the programme includes a Foundation Year that provides a broad introduction to key concepts, with progression dependent on successfully passing all modules. The course is informed by industry and commercial partnerships, ensuring that learning reflects current developments and professional practice. In the early stages of the degree, students build a strong technical foundation in programming, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, and web development, alongside an introduction to artificial intelligence through practical projects. In later stages, the focus shifts to specialist topics such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and the deployment of AI systems, supported by skills in backend development, object-oriented programming, and database engineering. Graduates are prepared for roles including Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Machine Learning Specialist, Data Scientist, and Natural Language Processing Developer. The course also offers an optional professional placement year after the second year, providing an opportunity to gain industry experience and enhance career prospects, supported by the University’s employer networks and careers services.
