Overview

Program Description With a major in Communication Disorders, you can make a big difference in the life of someone challenged by speech or hearing problems. You might help a first-grader teased by classmates for her stutter. Or a grand-dad who wants to talk to his grandchildren over the telephone. Your degree will prepare you to work in Alabama’s public schools as an assistant to a speech therapist or go on to graduate school to become a licensed speech therapist or audiologist yourself. Then choose to work in the public school system, in a hospital, or set up your own private practice. AUM’s is one of the few Communication Disorders programs in the country where undergraduate students receive direct clinical experience with patients — and they can do it in AUM’s own Speech and Hearing Clinic. A degree in Communications Disorders will give you excellent job prospects — with higher-than-average salaries. Employment of speech language pathologists and audiologists through 2024 is expected to grow more than 20%, much faster than the average for all occupations. And their median pay is in excess of $70,000 per year – higher than the median annual wage of all occupations.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

The state of Alabama founded Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) in 1967, at the request of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. Then, like now, growing businesses desperately needed a deeper pool of educated employees. AUM's original mission involved support of government at all levels. Just seven miles east of the state capitol, today AUM continues to support a number of local, state and regional government functions, but our mission is much bigger. We have unique programs, unavailable anywhere else in the region, including Geographic Information Systems, Hospitality and Tourism, Homeland S...
