Overview

Program Description Policy Studies is a multidisciplinary major, centered in economics, history, and political science, and draws upon the expertise of faculty in those disciplines. This major is built upon a single required core of courses, which provides students with the tools essential for a coherent understanding of and participation in policy making, as well as those tools necessary to undertake a policy-oriented tutorial. This major also integrates internships with classroom experience, and provides applied courses focused on either American policy-making or policy making in a global context. Policy Studies is designed to prepare students for either a career in international or domestic policy making in public and private settings. For U.S. students interested in international policy, this major will prepare them for the examination for entrance into the U.S. Foreign Service and other government careers. International students will learn to interpret U.S. policy to their national governments. Students interested in careers in domestic policy making can prepare for careers in public service, either in elected office, government agencies, or non-governmental policy organizations. This major can serve as a base for graduate work in international relations, public policy, and law, as well as for more traditional academic fields.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
