Overview

Program Description The exercise science major prepares students for professional practice in a variety of fields including exercise physiology, exercise and fitness training, hospital-based and corporate wellness programming, and sports medicine, as well as preparation for graduate study in physical therapy, medicine, and other health science programs. Exercise science, as defined by the American College of Sports Medicine, is the study of movement and the associated functional responses and adaptations. The field of exercise science ranges from the study of how organ systems function at the cellular level, to enhancing the biomechanical efficiency of the individual. The benefits of exercise have been medically recognized and accepted for its role in preventive medicine and in the rehabilitative process of health and well being. Professionals in exercise science are prepared to examine, evaluate, prescribe, and manage health and fitness of healthy people across the life span, as well as promote healthy lifestyles and prevention programs for individuals and communities.
