Overview

This professionally accredited Software Engineering degree will develop students knowledge and expertise in the design, development and delivery of software for modern environments and platforms. As a Software Engineer, one might find themselves developing beautiful websites, building mobile apps, or even creating the software that will bring the next generation of rockets into space. The accredited BSc Software Engineering degree gives students the skills this fast-moving industry demands. In collaboration with industry partners, real-life problems and state-of-the-art tools are the core of this degree. Students will gain advanced programming skills in a range of languages and will experience the entire cycle of software development, from programming to coding quality, communication in multidisciplinary teams, software testing and debugging. Students will develop an appreciation of software carpentry and ‘codemanship’: creating useful and usable software artefacts. In the first year students will cover essential computing concepts and develop the technical and academic skills and knowledge necessary for the rest of the degree. In years two and three, the focus will be the design and development of software for particular applications and students will examine architectural paradigms such as parallel and distributed computing. This degree has been accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by BCS. An accredited degree entitles graduates to professional membership of BCS, which is an important part of the criteria for achieving Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the Institute. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
