Overview

Public health professionals fight emerging health threats, in their neighborhoods and around the globe. They understand how disease works—not just in bodies, but in communities, as well. That means studying the biological, behavioral and social issues (think race, gender, immigrant status, street violence, access to healthy food and job opportunities, and environmental factors) that prevent wellness and allow illness to spread. And, of course, it means helping people stay healthy, by reaching out to them, educating and empowering them, and connecting them with vital resources. To be successful in public health, students will need to be very passionate about helping other people. They will also need to be a forward and critical thinker. And, students need to be willing to go where people are struggling because that’s where they are most needed. The Associate in Science in Public Health Science for Transfer (AS-T) degree is designed as a pathway for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Science or similar major at a California State University (CSU) campus. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. With the completion of this program, students will demonstrate knowledge of the basic research methods in public health, knowledge of the major theoretical and philosophical trends in public health, knowledge of the major primary sources in various public health areas, critical analysis and problem solving skills, and effective writing ability.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
