Overview

This program is designed for students who wish to gain a deep understanding of human behaviour and apply this knowledge to promote mental health and well-being among individuals, families, groups, and communities. Students develop a strong foundation in psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy through a blend of theoretical study, applied learning, and practical experience. The curriculum integrates a variety of counselling and psychotherapy approaches—such as cognitive-behavioural, humanistic, psychodynamic, and solution-focused methods—alongside core studies in developmental, social, and abnormal psychology. Emphasis is placed on ethical and evidence-based professional practice, research literacy, and the ability to integrate theory with practice in diverse settings. Through practicum and work-integrated learning experiences, students gain hands-on experience with a range of client populations and community organizations. These placements provide valuable exposure to different therapeutic environments and help students develop the professional skills required for employment in mental health and social service settings, or for pursuing graduate studies in counselling, psychotherapy, or related disciplines. Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of roles and settings, including community mental health agencies, schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, crisis intervention programs, and private practice environments under supervision. They are equipped with the interpersonal, analytical, and ethical competencies required to contribute effectively to the promotion of mental health and wellness across diverse populations.
