Overview

George Brown’s Early Childhood Education Diploma has prepared graduates for careers as early childhood educators for more than 40 years. The two-year programme prepares students to work with children from six weeks to 12 years of age in a range of early childhood education settings. The Early Childhood Education Diploma provides the knowledge and practical experience required to support children’s learning and development. Students explore the holistic developmental needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children, while learning to design inclusive education and care programmes that respond to each child’s individual needs and interests. The programme also focuses on working with families and the wider community. Students develop the skills needed to build positive relationships and contribute to supportive, inclusive early-learning environments. To reinforce classroom learning, the programme alternates between academic study and field placement experiences. This integrated approach enables students to build confidence progressively, apply theory in practical settings and develop the skills required to enter employment after graduation. Students complete a seven-week field placement during each semester. These placements provide opportunities to work with children from different age groups and in a variety of early childhood education settings. The experience enables students to integrate classroom theory with hands-on practice and develop a strong understanding of professional responsibilities. George Brown operates Ontario’s largest network of college-run lab school childcare centres. The 14 centres, located across Toronto, serve more than 1,000 children and their families each year. They provide students with access to facilities that reflect best practice in early childhood education, while also supporting the families and communities they serve. Some field placement partners may require students to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination. Students who do not meet these requirements may be unable to complete the required placement component within the scheduled timeframe. Students wishing to begin the programme in January or May 2026 should apply to the 2025/26 academic year. Those planning to begin in January or May 2027 should apply to the May 2026/27 intake. An accelerated option is also available for students who are able to study without significant breaks. This pathway can be completed over 16 consecutive months, comprising four continuous semesters. Students who hold a diploma or degree in a related field may also be eligible for a fast-track option that can be completed in approximately 10 months. Graduates may pursue careers in childcare and early-years programmes, full-day and integrated kindergarten, family resource programmes, special education settings and therapeutic nursery programmes. Successful completion of the programme makes graduates eligible to apply for registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators in Ontario as Registered Early Childhood Educators. By the end of the programme, students will be able to design child-centred, play-based curricula, support children’s learning and development by responding to their individual needs and interests, build caring relationships with children, families and communities, and create safe, healthy and inclusive early-learning environments.

About the Institution

George Brown Polytechnic opened its doors in 1968, welcoming just over 2,000 students. In addition to programs in construction, early childhood education, dental services and the culinary arts – subjects they continue to teach – George Brown once offered programs that might not be quite as relevant today, like sign writing or watchmaking. Believe it or not, they even prepared students for careers at sea through a marine engineering program. Since then, the student population has grown to over 30,000. People come to George Brown from across the Greater Toronto Area, the country and the world to...
