Overview

College Certificate - Pre-Health Sciences - Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees (PHS2W) (Woodstock): The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program provides students with the opportunity to study subject areas relevant to health career programs at Fanshawe College and to instill an appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of health care disciplines. The goal of the program is to prepare students for their chosen health career program. Students will be prepared to enter other programs within the School of Health Sciences or pursue their education at other institutions. The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: examine biological concepts, processes and systems of the human body, including genetics and epigenetics, as well as the structure, function and properties of the molecules of life, cells, tissues and organ systems in relation to homeostasis, physical development and health. examine concepts, processes and systems of chemistry, including atomic and molecular structure; quantities in chemical reactions; solutions and solubility; acids and bases; as well as organic chemistry and biochemistry in relation to health and the human body. solve numeric problems and interpret data related to health sciences and other science-related fields using mathematical concepts, including algebra and probability, along with descriptive and inferential statistics. use health sciences and other science-related language and terminology appropriately to communicate clearly, concisely, and correctly in written, spoken, and visual forms. prepare a personal strategy and plan for academic, career and professional development in the health sciences or other science-related fields. investigate health sciences and science-related questions, problems and evidence using the scientific method. examine fundamental physics laws and concepts and their application to health sciences and other science-related fields. Advanced College Diploma - Medical Radiation Technology (MRT1) (London): The Medical Radiation Technology program is offered over three academic years (7 levels). Fanshawe College provides theoretical knowledge along with an extensive simulation component of the program while a number of participating hospitals across Southwestern Ontario offer practical instruction and clinical experience. The Radiological Technologist uses x-ray radiation to create images of the tissues, organs, bones and vessels that make up the human body. Through a combination of classroom lectures, laboratory simulation, and clinical education, students learn to operate sophisticated x-ray equipment, and advanced computer systems to produce diagnostic images of human anatomy, position patients for x-ray procedures, practice radiation safety and deliver quality patient care. The Medical Radiation Technology program provides learning experiences that enable the student to acquire and assimilate the necessary technical competencies to function effectively as a supportive health care provider in the MRT profession. The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: Produce and assess a variety of high quality diagnostic images employing current technologies for image acquisition and processing. Interpret requests and adapt procedures relative to patient and diagnostic image requirements in routine and complex clinical cases. Comply with relevant legislation, regulations and ethical standards for the best practice in diagnostic imaging. Employ accepted radiation, health and safety practices with self, patients, their families, and health care team members in a variety of clinical settings Provide quality care to diverse patients in assessment, diagnostic imaging, and therapeutic intervention, while incorporating patient advocacy and education to patients, their family, health care team members and the public. Monitor patients’ status at all times and respond to emergency situations where indicated. Operate, calibrate, set up, troubleshoot and evaluate a variety of complex equipment safely. Analyze a broad range of diagnostic imaging procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis and management of multiple system disorders. Interact with patients, their families, the health care team members and the public using effective communication and interpersonal skills. Exhibit behaviour consistent with the professional role of a medical radiation technologist, including teamwork, provision of health education and establishment of strategies for lifelong learning.
