Overview

Why study Philosophy at Hartwick? There is a desire for more than just a career; the aim is to embrace an approach to life that involves understanding ethics, learning to think critically, and asking insightful questions. Here’s why the Philosophy program stands out: Participate in meaningful discussions and develop skills to debate with grace and intellect. Customize studies to align with specific interests, whether in environmental ethics, medical ethics, or the philosophy of gaming. Gain practical experience by interning with local organizations, enhancing understanding of community involvement and its role in leading a thoughtful life. Many career paths: A philosophy degree lays the groundwork for so many careers, including law, education, public administration and business. Here’s where Hartwick alums are putting their philosophy skills to work: AmericCorps VISTA Reading Partners Segar & Sciortino PLLC The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) The New York Department of Public Service The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences What students will learn: Engage with both historical philosophers and modern thinkers for a comprehensive learning experience. Focus studies on epistemology (how we come to know), metaphysics (the study of reality), and ethics (the study of moral ideals and practices). Join the Philosophy Club to invite speakers and host film nights for the campus community. With dedication, earn an invitation to join Phi Sigma Tau, the philosophy honor society. Collaborate with faculty on research initiatives and develop an individual project to present at events like Student Showcase or national conferences.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
