Overview

Plant and soil sciences graduates are crucial to meeting society’s need for food, livestock feed, fiber and fuel through the conservation and management of plant and soil resources. Plant and soil sciences majors' learning experience will include field-based classes, numerous laboratory experiments, non-traditional classroom settings and hands-on learning. Students can work alongside faculty in areas such as biotechnology, crop production, environmental remediation, plant breeding and genetics, plant physiology, soil chemistry, soil nutrient management, soil physics, water quality and weed science. The plant biotechnology and improvement option focuses on improving crops to adapt to changing environments through traditional crop breeding or plant biotechnology. If students want to learn to adapt crops to changes in the environment, they will learn how to breed plants and improve them for specific environments.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
