Overview

The three-year BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care degree is designed to prepare students to make a positive impact on the daily lives of vulnerable people. Delivered in excellent teaching facilities, the undergraduate programme provides opportunities for students to develop the values, practical skills and knowledge required for a successful career in the global health and social care sector. Led by a highly experienced and dedicated teaching team, the programme explores key principles including professional values, ethical care practices, the promotion of physical and mental health, safeguarding, and the advocacy of diversity and inclusion. Its focus is on developing knowledgeable, compassionate and person-centred care professionals. The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care provides a strong academic pathway for students preparing to enter the health and social care workplace or progress to further study in a related academic or professional area. The second year includes a placement module, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience in a health and social care setting. The module focuses on the development of generic competencies, while enabling students to gain an understanding of workplace functions and structures. During the placement, students are required to maintain a written reflective log and are supported by a tutor who helps them demonstrate the learning gained through their practical experience. The placement module is linked to an employability module, which focuses on transferable skills and career planning. This enables students to consider their personal and professional development throughout the programme and to prepare for future employment opportunities. In the final year, students can expand their knowledge in specific areas of health and social care that are of particular interest to them. Available modules include children and families, mental health and safeguarding. These options provide insight into potential areas of specialisation and support the development of deeper knowledge and understanding. The programme also includes a module examining vulnerability in relation to people who use health and social care services. Compassionate, person-centred care is considered throughout the degree, alongside the principles and practices required to support individuals effectively. Students will also study research methods and approaches in health and social care. This includes the development of a research proposal, which will provide the foundation for the final research project or dissertation. This work enables students to develop knowledge and understanding in an area of personal interest, while preparing them for postgraduate study and demonstrating academic skills that can be applied in the workplace. Learning through case studies, workshops and role play is embedded throughout the programme. These activities enable students to explore how theoretical and academic learning connects with practice in the health and social care sector.
