Overview

At Sacred Heart university, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the health care system and its many specialties -- allowing to create a flexible career path in the health field, or continue to graduate school to obtain an advanced health care degree in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, public health, pre-accelerated nursing and more. In the Bachelor of Science in Health Science program, students will also: Learn to evaluate trends in health care and its systems, policies and environments Understand health care inequities and how to prioritize approaches to health care access Develop leadership skills for strategic planning and professional management Study in a well-rounded health care curriculum that pairs well with future graduate work Apply epidemiological analysis to health data, and apply biological, cultural and social determinants of health and their effects on health equality Identify approaches to health care system diversity and demonstrate cultural competence in personal and professional interactions Develop ethical standards, values and attitudes appropriate to health care professionals Students apply to the dual degree program as incoming freshmen and are admitted directly into the graduate program at the same time as their admission as undergraduate students. Dual degree students are guaranteed a place in the Master of Social Work program provided they continue, as undergraduate students, to meet program-specific criteria to progress into enrollment in the graduate program. Dual degree students, therefore, have a space reserved for them in the graduate program beginning in their first year, with clear criteria and achievements required to progress into the graduate program. Combined with advisement from their undergraduate academic advisor, students’ engagement with the School of Social Work, and participation in activities offered by the Master of Social Work program provide strong support toward successful progression into graduate study.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
