Overview

Earn students Bachelor of Science in business economics at Sacred Heart University, and advance their knowledge through both theory and practical application. Economics majors are equipped with the analytical skills essential in the fields of business, public policy and law. The study of economics helps students hone analytical, decision-making and leadership skills. These core skills learned in economics complement many other areas; thus, many students choose economics as part of a double major. Students apply to the dual degree program as incoming freshmen and are admitted directly into the graduate program at the same time as their admission as undergraduate students. Dual degree students are guaranteed a place in the Master of Science in Chemistry program provided they continue, as undergraduate students, to meet program-specific criteria to progress into enrollment in the graduate program. Dual degree students, therefore, have a space reserved for them in the graduate program beginning in their first year, with clear criteria and achievements required to progress into the graduate program. Students in the 4+1 Master of Science in Chemistry Dual Degree program complete their baccalaureate degree in four years of undergraduate study and complete the Master of Science in Chemistry in one year of graduate study. The ability to earn both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in five years (versus the typical two-year time frame to earn the Master of Science in Chemistry degree after graduation) offers students significant cost savings and the ability to enter the workforce with advanced credentials one year earlier. Combined with advisement from their undergraduate academic advisor, students’ engagement with the College of Arts & Sciences and participation in activities and programs offered by the Chemistry program provide strong support toward successful progression into graduate study.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

Founded in 1963, Sacred Heart University is a Catholic, private, coeducational, residential four-year liberal arts institution granting bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. SHU is the first lay-led Catholic university in the United States and the second-largest Catholic university in New England. Sacred Heart University was founded on a mission to bring social justice to a broken world, and since their inception, they have been – continually and increasingly – committed to the realization of that goal – both within themselves and the greater community.
