Overview

The STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) major at Sacred Heart University provides students with curriculum grounded in the natural sciences that combine courses from multiple traditional disciplines. In this major, learners will develop basic skills by taking foundational courses in science, mathematics, and computing. They will then focus on additional science content in advanced courses across multiple disciplines. A fourth-year capstone course will help students integrate the concepts from multiple disciplines to solve real-world problems through case studies and projects. The need for STEM prepared teachers is persistent in the United States and a consistent area of need for teachers in Connecticut. The STEM major is appropriate for undergraduates seeking employment in Elementary Education and is designed for undergraduates to transition into the 5th year program in the College of Education to obtain Elementary Education Licensure and a Masters of Arts in Teaching. STEM majors also have the opportunity to continue on in the College of Education to earn a Certificate of Advanced Studies in STEM Education.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

Founded in 1963, Sacred Heart University is a Catholic, private, coeducational, residential four-year liberal arts institution granting bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. SHU is the first lay-led Catholic university in the United States and the second-largest Catholic university in New England. Sacred Heart University was founded on a mission to bring social justice to a broken world, and since their inception, they have been – continually and increasingly – committed to the realization of that goal – both within themselves and the greater community.
