Overview

The Accounting concentration is designed to prepare students for accounting careers in public practice, industry, finance, government and non-profit organizations. The accounting field provides excellent career opportunities; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2012 and 2022 economy will grow 50,000 or more new accounting jobs. A factor that sets the SCSU concentration in accounting apart satisfies the requirement to be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant “CPA.” Accounting courses offered include International Accounting, Fraud and Forensic Accounting, Accounting Internships, a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) course, and an Accounting Capstone course. Every year the School hold an Accounting and Finance Career Fair to help students meet potential employers. In addition, the SCSU Accounting Society regularly hosts speakers from accounting professionals employed in public, private, and governmental accounting positions. The Society’s activities also include an annual awards banquet, and community service projects. Accounting graduates should possess the following: Knowledge of the accounting cycle. Knowledge of sophisticated financial accounting topics such as business combinations, governmental accounting, partnership accounting and other advanced financial accounting topics. Knowledge of International Accounting Principles and the impact of global issues. Ability to evaluate financial results through examination of relevant data (i.e., income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement and budgets). Ability to use current technology (e.g., spreadsheet programs, general ledger software, enterprise resource planning and reporting languages). Knowledge of auditing principles and techniques. Knowledge of CPA exam education requirements, parts of the exam and topics included. Knowledge of the role of the accounting profession in society, experience in community service and participation in the accounting society. Public accounting careers prepare graduates to become Certified Public Accountants or CPAs. The size of CPA firms varies from large, international CPA firms to regional firms to small local accounting practices. The areas of specialty within the firm generally include audit, tax, management consulting, business valuation and forensic accounting.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
