Overview

The Pharmacy Assistant Diploma Program at SELC College prepares students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to support pharmacists and contribute to pharmacy operations in retail, hospital, community, and long-term care settings. The program covers pharmaceutical fundamentals, medical and pharmaceutical knowledge, prescription processing and dispensing, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy technology, and safety and infection control. Students also develop professional communication and patient-care skills within the context of the Canadian healthcare system. The curriculum includes courses in medical terminology, pharmaceutical fundamentals, principles of pharmacology, pharmaceutical calculations, compounding and aseptic techniques, community pharmacy practices, Canadian healthcare, and healthcare ethics. Career and employment strategies are also included to help students prepare for employment in the healthcare sector. The program combines academic training with practical experience, requiring 21 weeks of academic study followed by a mandatory three-week practicum, for a total duration of 24 weeks. Upon completion, graduates may pursue entry-level roles such as pharmacy assistant in retail, hospital, long-term care, and compounding pharmacies, as well as positions related to pharmacy inventory coordination. The program is a post-secondary diploma and is approved by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of British Columbia’s Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. Admission requires completion of high school studies or an equivalent qualification, and applicants must meet the specified English-language requirement, such as IELTS 5.5 or an accepted equivalent.
