Overview

The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering is a distinctive programme that employs a novel, unified practical methodology to design high-performance products, solve complex engineering problems, and optimise products and processes across diverse industries, including biomedical and medical device manufacturing, biotechnology, manufacturing, automotive, aeronautical, automation, construction, and energy. The programme integrates simulation of engineering component behaviour, failure analysis, material selection and characterisation, product and process design, and optimisation methods, enabling design for performance and innovation within industrial contexts. Emphasising the practical application of theoretical knowledge, the MEng bridges the gap between theory and real-world engineering practice. The programme includes 14 hours of contact time across three days per week, with potential engagement with industry for the Master project. Graduates are prepared to apply a time-efficient, methodology-driven approach to solving engineering problems, optimising processes, and designing new products. Career opportunities for graduates span major Irish and multinational companies across sectors such as biomedical and medical device manufacturing, biotechnology, manufacturing, automotive, aeronautical, automation, construction, and energy. The programme also equips graduates with the educational standard required to apply for Chartered Engineer status, fulfilling Engineers Ireland’s requirements for this internationally recognised professional title.
