Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Medical Technology integrates engineering, science, and technology to prepare graduates for two distinct career pathways: clinical engineering within hospital settings and roles within the medical device or medical software industries. The programme is suited to individuals with an interest in biomedical engineering and the medical applications of science and technology. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in clinical engineering departments in public or private hospitals, where responsibilities include maintaining and managing critical medical equipment as part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Career opportunities are also available within the medical device and medical software industries across technical, quality, and design roles. Postgraduate progression options include master’s programmes in areas such as radiography, biomedical engineering, medical physics, and physiotherapy. The curriculum covers foundational subjects in the early years, including design principles in medical technology, mathematics, physics, anatomy, electronics, and computing, progressing to advanced topics such as biomechanics and biomaterials, clinical technology, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy, rehabilitation technology and product design, and cybersecurity in healthcare. The programme is delivered through small class sizes with dedicated academic staff and provides extensive hands-on experience with state-of-the-art medical technologies used in hospital, healthcare, and industry environments. An industrial placement in Year 3 is an integral component of the programme. The programme is accredited by Engineers Ireland, enabling graduates to apply for Associate Engineer status with Engineers Ireland following the completion of relevant professional experience. In addition, two scholarships sponsored by Becton Dickinson are available to first-year students.
