Overview

The MA in Social Work is a values-based programme focused on the well-being of individuals, groups, families, and communities, particularly those experiencing multiple dimensions of vulnerability. Social workers trained through this programme are prepared to give voice to traditionally marginalised populations while advocating for social justice. The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to assess and address a variety of challenges, using evidence-informed practice to guide interventions. The MA in Social Work at TUS is highly practice-oriented, with students actively participating in class activities, including role-plays, to develop practical skills. Graduates may pursue careers in professionally qualified social work roles across Tusla Child and Family Agency, HSE, primary care, medical social work, disability social work, mental health social work, and NGOs, as well as training and research leading to PhD qualifications. The programme offers a wide variety of placement opportunities that reflect current professional practice and welcomes collaboration with social work agencies and practitioners in providing these placements. Criteria for practice educators include engagement in social work practice, CORU registration, and a minimum of two years post-qualification experience. Practice educators provide students with opportunities to shadow and supervise social work practice, conduct agreed supervision sessions, participate in tripartite meetings with the student and their academic supervisors, and complete required documentation for the student’s placement assessment.
