Overview

The BEd (Hons) in Art and Design Teacher Education prepares graduates to teach Art and Design at second level. The programme begins in a studio setting, introducing students to a range of creative disciplines, including Fashion Design, Painting, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Sculpture, Animation & Motion Design, Printmaking, and Contemporary Practice. Alongside practical creative work, students study educational theory and practice, developing the teaching skills and pedagogical knowledge required for a career in Art and Design education. School placement is a mandatory component in years 2, 3, and 4, and Garda Vetting is required prior to placement. Criminal convictions may impact the ability to secure work placements. The programme emphasizes the integration of creativity and pedagogy, providing opportunities for students to explore and develop their creative voice across multiple mediums. Educational theory is combined with practical studio experience, enabling graduates to design and deliver engaging and impactful learning experiences. Residencies, exhibitions, and industry partnerships further enhance professional development, equipping graduates to cultivate and inspire the next generation of artists and designers.
