Overview

Ireland’s reputation as a centre of software excellence is unrivalled in Europe, hosting both multinational and indigenous firms that generate approximately €16 billion in exports annually. The sector spans a wide range of activities, including software development, research and development, business services, and EMEA or international headquarters operations. As computing systems become increasingly intelligent, artificial intelligence is advancing the simulation of human thinking. The creation of computer systems that automatically improve through experience has applications across areas such as robotic control, data mining, autonomous navigation, and bioinformatics. This MSc programme provides a broad introduction to machine learning and statistical pattern recognition, covering supervised and unsupervised learning, learning theory, reinforcement learning, and control. The curriculum includes core programming modules such as Object Oriented Programming I, which uses the Java programming language to prepare students for the Oracle Certified Associate examination. Teaching combines lectures on syntax and theory with practical coding sessions that reinforce learning, and students holding relevant certification may be eligible for recognition of prior learning. Graduates of the programme are well positioned for careers in the ICT sector, where demand for skilled professionals continues to exceed supply. Industry reports highlight persistent shortages in software development roles, particularly in areas such as cloud computing, web development, databases using Oracle or SQL, and programming languages including Java, JavaScript, C#, and .NET. Strong industrial collaboration within the Department of Computer and Software Engineering further enhances graduate employability. National skills strategies project sustained growth in demand for high-level ICT skills, with employment of ICT professionals expected to rise steadily, reflecting the ongoing expansion of technology companies operating in Ireland.
