Overview

The BSc in Veterinary Nursing prepares graduates for an exciting, diverse and demanding career within veterinary practice. Veterinary nursing requires strong communication skills, empathy, the ability to think logically under pressure and effective problem-solving capabilities. Core professional activities within veterinary practice include dispensing and administering medications and fluid therapy, performing laboratory diagnostic tests, conducting diagnostic imaging, assisting in the administration of anaesthetics, preparing for and supporting veterinary surgical procedures, and delivering nursing clinics. The programme at TUS Midlands provides education and training in the care of companion animals, equine and farm animals, equipping graduates for a wide range of veterinary nursing career pathways. The programme is accredited by the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) and ACOVENE. This established degree programme develops multidisciplinary skills required to play a key role in small animal, large animal and equine veterinary practices. Over the three-year programme, students undertake on-farm training in farm animal production and health and safety, alongside compulsory clinical placements in veterinary practices at each stage of the degree. A total of 30 weeks of clinical placement is completed across the three years in small animal, equine and large animal hospitals. This includes eight weeks of placement in both first and second year from May to July, and a fourteen-week placement in the second semester of third year. In addition, students complete two residential training weeks at Gurteen College, Ballinagarry, Roscrea, County Tipperary, during both first and second year of the programme.
