Overview

The BSc in Exercise and Health Science integrates expertise from physical activity, nutrition, sports science, and behaviour change specialists. The programme is delivered in small class groups, providing greater access to equipment, applied learning, and hands-on training. It supports the development of generic skills to enhance employability while preparing students for the expectations of third-level education. The course is designed to produce specialists in behaviour change, particularly in the areas of exercise, physical activity, and nutrition, addressing the growing prevalence of poor lifestyle habits that increase the risk of chronic disease. Graduates are trained to promote healthier lifestyle behaviours through effective, sustainable, and multi-layered interventions. This unique programme offers a focus on exercise prescription, exercise rehabilitation, nutrition, health promotion, and public health. A 24-week practical work placement provides applied experience in a variety of real-world settings, reflecting potential career opportunities. Graduates are equipped for a wide range of roles requiring expertise in supporting individuals, communities, and populations to make positive lifestyle changes. Career pathways include positions as exercise rehabilitation specialists, physical activity or sports promotion and development officers, health promotion specialists within the HSE, wellness professionals, and roles working with community groups or specialist populations such as youth, socially disadvantaged or minority groups, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
