Overview

The BEng in Engineering (Common Entry) provides a broad first-year curriculum designed to give students sufficient experience and insight to make an informed choice about which specialised mechanical engineering course to pursue at TUS Midlands. This common first year exposes students to major areas such as mechanical, energy, polymer, and automation and robotics engineering, allowing them to develop an understanding of their interests and aptitudes before progressing to the second year. The shared core syllabus also encourages interaction with peers across different streams, offering additional perspectives to guide career decisions. The programme supports students in exploring various pathways within engineering, including mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering with energy, polymer and mechanical engineering, and automation and robotics. The first year provides a learning environment that enables informed choices regarding career direction, guided by discussions with lecturers and engagement with peers. Graduates from each stream develop a common set of core mechanical engineering skills while also gaining specialised training specific to their chosen discipline. Mechanical engineering graduates can work as technicians in industries such as automotive, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, ICT, manufacturing, or precision engineering. Graduates of mechanical engineering with energy gain additional expertise in energy technologies, enabling roles in energy efficiency projects and renewable energy systems. Polymer and mechanical engineering graduates are prepared for technician roles overseeing production processes, identifying equipment or process improvements, and participating in improvement projects. Automation and robotics graduates receive specialised training in electronics, automation, and robotics, including machine vision systems, industrial robots, and software such as RoboDK, preparing them for roles in highly automated sectors. Graduates from this stream have secured positions in leading companies including Robotics & Drives, Trend, Chanelle, and Medtronic, in roles ranging from plant design and quality control to system integration and technician positions.
