Overview

The BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education and Care recognises the pivotal role of the early childhood educator in delivering high-quality care and education. The field of early childhood education and care is experiencing significant change and development, and this programme reflects those developments by engaging with both theory and practice related to quality provision for children from birth to six years. The course emphasises supporting children’s strengths, interests and abilities, while also recognising the important role of family and society in early education and care. The programme has been approved by the Qualifications Advisory Board (QAB). The course explores the evolving and dynamic context of early childhood education and care, with particular attention to current changes in policy, legislation and professional practice. It is designed to develop knowledge, skills and professional values that support the holistic development of young children. Through engagement with academic and theoretical literature, classroom-based simulated practice and supervised practice placement in early childhood education and care settings, graduates are prepared to become reflective educators who can clearly articulate what young children are learning, how learning takes place and the pedagogical approaches that inform professional practice. On completion of the programme, graduates will have developed the ability to co-construct meaningful learning experiences with children across a range of early childhood education and care environments. They will be equipped to work effectively as part of a professional team, take responsibility for informed decision-making and independently undertake primary and secondary research. As part of the programme requirements, all students are subject to National Vetting Bureau procedures prior to commencing work placement. Failure to disclose previous convictions may result in dismissal from the programme, and certain convictions, depending on their nature, may also lead to exclusion from the course.
