Overview

The BA (Hons) in Social Care Practice is a CORU-approved programme within the Health and Social Care Regulatory Body framework. Social care is recognised as both a practice-based profession and an academic discipline, and this degree provides a recognised professional qualification in social care. The programme prepares graduates for the challenging and rewarding role of social care worker through a structured combination of academic study and assessed practice-based learning. A range of innovative teaching methods is employed to support the development of the knowledge, skills and professional values required for effective social care practice. Social care workers engage with a diverse range of service user groups, including children and adolescents in care, young people considered at risk within the juvenile justice system, individuals with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, individuals with alcohol or drug dependencies, older adults requiring care, and families within the community. Two supervised practice placements, totalling 800 hours, are an essential component of this four-year programme and are undertaken during years two and three. Practice placement provides the context in which students demonstrate achievement of the Social Care Standards of Proficiency, which define the knowledge, understanding and competencies required on completion of a social care programme. The programme is responsive to the evolving landscape of social care practice, as reflected in the expanding range of placement agencies available. Students enrolled in the BA (Hons) in Social Care Practice are required to be fit to practice in accordance with the Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest Student Fitness to Practice Policy, with specific reference to the Department of Social Sciences, Social Care Addendum. Students must formally acknowledge that they have read and understood these requirements as part of their participation in the programme.
