Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Microbiology focuses on the scientific study of microscopic organisms, known as microorganisms or microbes, which are generally invisible to the naked eye. These organisms include bacteria, algae, protozoa, fungi, viruses and prions, all of which play critical roles in sustaining life on Earth. Microbiology is a broad and diverse discipline, encompassing sub-fields such as medical, veterinary, environmental, food and industrial microbiology. The significance of microbiology in contemporary society was clearly demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many modern scientific disciplines, including genetic engineering, genomics, bioinformatics, microbial biotechnology, immunology and molecular biology, have evolved from classical microbiology and now form an integral part of microbiology teaching and research at TUS. The programme includes an industrial placement in the third year, offering practical, real-world experience and the opportunity to develop direct links with industry. The programme provides comprehensive preparation for careers in the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries, as well as in food, environmental and related sectors, or for progression to postgraduate research. Specialist modules in computational biology and bioinformatics offer training in DNA and protein sequence analysis, an area not typically emphasised in other microbiology programmes. The course also offers distinctive placement and training opportunities with organisations such as the Marine Institute, Teagasc and a range of industry partners. Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Microbiology have employment opportunities across a wide range of sectors, including food, pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, biorefinery, environmental protection, pollution control, bioremediation, industrial processing and wastewater treatment. Career paths also include roles in hospitals, public and animal health laboratories, research institutes, and pharmaceutical companies involved in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases associated with microorganisms. Opportunities also exist within universities, colleges and professional schools as researchers and educators. For those pursuing further study, postgraduate pathways commonly include medical and veterinary microbiology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, environmental microbiology, genetics and molecular biology. Additional options, such as the Professional Master of Education, are available for graduates seeking careers as second-level science teachers.
