Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology focuses on the study and manipulation of molecules, genes, cells and whole organisms to develop tools and technologies that benefit society and have commercial value. Biotechnology is a dynamic and evolving discipline centred on cell and molecular biology, genetic engineering and genome sequencing, integrating the natural sciences with engineering to create innovative products and services. Biotechnologists have made significant contributions to the development of the ‘smart economy’ across healthcare, agriculture, food production and environmental sectors. Their work has led to new methods for diagnosing, treating and preventing disease, repairing and replacing damaged organs, producing biofuels and bioplastics, cultivating crops with improved yields and resistance to drought and pests, and removing environmental contaminants. Biopharmaceuticals, a key outcome of biotechnology research, represent approximately half of all medicines produced worldwide. Ireland is a leading producer of biopharmaceutical drugs, with nine of the ten largest global biopharmaceutical companies operating in the country, making biopharmaceutical production one of Ireland’s largest exports and a significant driver of economic growth. The biopharmaceutical sector provides a vibrant employment market for graduates of biotechnology programmes, with many graduates pursuing careers within this thriving industry. The BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology at TUS Midlands, Athlone, combines targeted academic modules with local work placements to prepare graduates for careers in the industrial biotechnology sector or for progression to postgraduate study in highly specialised areas of biotechnology.
