Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology is focused on the study of how drugs interact with cells, tissues and organisms, with the aim of understanding their potential to treat or prevent disease and contribute to the discovery and distribution of new therapies that improve human health. This four-year programme is designed to produce graduate pharmacologists with knowledge of drug effects on the human body, as well as the processes involved in drug discovery and development. The course is aligned with the needs of Ireland’s thriving pharmaceutical industry, which relies on a skilled graduate workforce. The programme also emphasises the development of flexible interpersonal and collaborative skills through team-based learning strategies integrated into specific modules. A key feature of the course is the integrated placement in the second semester of Year 3, typically hosted by an industrial partner, which provides practical, real-world experience that enhances professional readiness. In Year 4, students undertake a research project and have the option to participate in one of the annual regional conferences organized by the Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Network, further supporting engagement with current research and professional networks. Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology are equipped for careers in a range of sectors, including pharmaceutical companies, toxicology, clinical research organisations, the Health Products Regulatory Authority, the biotechnology sector, chemical safety and toxicology, and higher education. The programme also provides a pathway for further study at postgraduate levels, including MSc and PhD programmes, as well as opportunities in medical or life-science research, Professional Masters in Education (PME), and graduate entry to medicine or veterinary medicine.
