Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Athletic & Rehabilitation Therapy focuses on the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries commonly associated with sports and physical activity. Sports injuries can result from accidents, improper training practices, inadequate equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm-up and stretching, and typically involve muscles, bones, and cartilage, including conditions such as tennis elbow, runner’s knee, fractures, torn ligaments and torn tendons. This programme is accredited by Athletic and Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland, enabling graduates to practice as Certified Athletic Therapists. In the first year, students are introduced to athletic rehabilitation therapy as a profession and have opportunities to participate in pre-participation screening of injuries for collegiate and professional teams. In the second year, clinical practice is introduced through the student-led START clinic and practical placements. The third year focuses on developing applied skills, laying the foundation for clinical practice placements in the first semester of the fourth year. The final year emphasises advanced clinical and rehabilitation techniques, alongside a capstone project that integrates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme, preparing graduates for professional practice in athletic rehabilitation therapy. Embedded within the curriculum are Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council of Ireland (PHECC) approved first-aid courses, with students becoming certified as Cardiac First Responders (CFR) and Emergency First Responders (EFR) by the second year. The Athlone campus provides leading facilities for sport and rehabilitation, featuring modern, state-of-the-art equipment and teaching spaces, including two rehabilitation laboratories, a sports science laboratory, a high-performance gym, a biomechanics laboratory, and the International Arena.
