Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Nutrition and Health Science is a distinctive interfacial degree that places equal emphasis on both nutrition and health science. The programme provides a scientific and evidence-based approach to nutrition, drawing on principles from biology, biochemistry, social and public health, while also addressing emerging topics such as biotechnology, food sustainability, and food security. The course develops competencies across nutritional science, health promotion, research, and practice-based nutrition, preparing graduates for careers as accredited nutritionists. The programme aims to cultivate expertise in nutrition and its application to health science and public health, offering an integrated understanding of the role of nutrition in health promotion initiatives. Core modules include nutrition, food science, nutrition across the lifecycle, and nutrition in health and disease, complemented by studies in behavioural sciences, health policy, research methods, epidemiology, biotechnology, and microbiology. The curriculum also covers principles of primary healthcare, strategies for health promotion, and methods for evaluating health outcomes. The course is underpinned by a strong foundation in the core sciences, and a rigorous scientific approach is central throughout. Graduates develop independent learning, critical thinking, reflective practice, evidence-based decision-making, problem-solving, and teamworking skills. A semester-long work placement in Year 3 provides practical experience, further preparing graduates for careers in nutrition and health. The degree aligns with national and international policies promoting healthier lifestyles, and the Midlands campus has an established record of research at a pan-European level in areas including food technologies, food safety, and applied nutrition.
