Overview

The BA (Hons) in Animation and Illustration, unique to the Midlands campus, is the only undergraduate programme in Ireland combining both animation and illustration. Graduates develop the ability to apply their knowledge of illustration fundamentals and animation principles across a wide range of sectors both in Ireland and internationally. The programme fosters independent learning as well as collaborative production, while emphasising strong analytical, IT, and critical reasoning skills essential for creating visually compelling and imaginative work. The animation and illustration industries have experienced significant global growth and have become key components of Ireland’s digital and creative economy, with career opportunities increasing annually. Ireland is home to technically sophisticated studios producing content for print, television, cinema, video games, mobile platforms, immersive exhibitions, and virtual and augmented reality. Graduates from the programme have gone on to work with internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated animation studios, create print and digital illustration for the global market, establish their own companies, and work independently on original content. Alumni occupy diverse roles within animation and illustration production for animated films, television production, and advertising, including background artist, character designer, animator, VFX compositor, scene preparer, storyboard artist, comic and graphic novel artist, agency illustrator, and production manager. The programme is particularly suited to those aiming for creative industries that value artistic talent, visual awareness, and organisational skills.
