Overview

Study the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that influence definitions of crime, explain offending and crime rates, sway societal reactions, influence policy, and shape the criminal justice system. With a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice students will be qualified to pursue careers in law enforcement, government, research, and non-profit agencies. Students may also consider graduate or law school as their next step. Delve into the philosophy and structure of the American criminal justice system by examining the intersection between laws, enforcement agents, legal personnel, criminal offenders, victims, and average citizens. Students will also study the individual and social causes of crime and the fundamentals of successful crime prevention programs. Benefit from UAlbany's location in the capital of New York State by engaging in hands-on learning opportunities, including internships with local, state, and federal law enforcement and government agencies and non-profit organizations that intersect with criminal justice.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
