Overview

This degree program, the first of its kind in Canada, provides comprehensive study in the rapidly growing field of behavioural psychology. By combining classroom instruction with 1,100 hours of supervised placements in community settings, the program enables students to develop strong applied skills and theoretical knowledge in preparation for careers or further studies. Governments and agencies increasingly recognize behavioural approaches as best practices in fields such as autism services, corrections, mental health services, education, and developmental disabilities. This honours degree complements St. Lawrence College’s established Behavioural Science diploma program and supports the college’s national leadership in the human services field. The program is based on a behavioural framework that has been scientifically demonstrated to develop skills and reduce challenging behaviours among a wide range of clients in various settings. Students develop a complex and highly effective set of skills at the honours degree level, reflecting the evolving needs of employers. Students learn about psychological theory and research while practising clinical skills under supervision with clients in up to three different settings. Graduates develop the knowledge and skills required to design and carry out effective and efficient assessment and treatment programs for diverse populations. The early years of the program establish a strong foundation in applied behaviour analysis (ABA), while the upper years place greater emphasis on behavioural counselling approaches. Through this progression, students develop well-rounded knowledge and skills in both ABA and behavioural counselling.
