Overview

Program Description The purpose of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is to provide students with self-awareness, knowledge and skills to work as professional clinical counselors with individuals, families, groups and organizations in a variety of mental health and agency settings. This program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, and 2022 program graduates had a mean score of 96.5 on the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE). Full-licensure: Once the degree is conferred, the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapies (BBHT) has requirements for the states two tier licensure system (LPC/LPCC), including direct clinical hours with clients, supervision by an approved supervisor, passing the National Counseling Exam and/or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling exam. An additional 2000 post- masters degree supervised clinical contact hours in a clinical setting is required to complete the requirements for Professional Counseling licensure in the state of Minnesota. Students can either write a thesis or a comprehensive exam as part of their degree, and both pathways result in a 61 credit-hour degree.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
