Overview

The Department of Special Education offers an undergraduate, comprehensive major which leads to licensure to teach students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, or developmental disabilities. Students will complete a common sequence of coursework which will culminates in a student teaching experience and specialized coursework during their senior year. After obtaining one license at the undergraduate level, they will have completed a majority of the coursework for the additional licenses, which may be obtained at the graduate level. An undergraduate major in Special Education leads to a Minnesota Academic and Behavioral Strategist (ABS) License for kindergarten through age 21. Additionally, this major offers the Community Options 2 program, a partnership with St. Cloud school district that is housed at St. Cloud State, gives special education teacher candidates the chance to complete field experience by helping 18 to 21 year old who have developmental or cognitive disabilities and autism spectrum disorders learn vocational, community and social skills that will help them live successfully in the community.
