Overview

Program Description The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tulsa (TU) is a 45-credit-hour degree program that allows students to develop basic intervention, evaluation, and consultation skills. The mission of graduate training in Clinical Psychology is to provide quality training in the scientist-practitioner model within a small private university setting. Science and practice are regarded as inseparable elements. Practice itself is regarded as the application of the theories, methods, and results of scientific psychology to clinical problems. The science of Psychology is construed broadly, and students are expected to develop familiarity with a wide range of psychological theories, methods, and results. Program faculty encourage students to understand the limits of human perception, reason, and intuition, and to appreciate scientific methods as correctives to the flaws and biases of natural human judgment. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume entry-level clinical positions in agency, health-care, and organizational settings. Licensing laws of states vary widely, and students should consult the licensing body in the state in which they intend to practice to determine opportunities and requirements for licensure at the master’s level.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

The University of Tulsa (TU) traces its roots to the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, a small boarding school in Muskogee, Indian Territory, which was founded in 1882. In 1894, the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church elevated the academy’s status and chartered it as Henry Kendall College, a name that honored the first general secretary of the Home Missions Board. The first classes in the new college were held on Sept. 12, 1894. Today, TU operates as an independent, nondenominational university. A top-rated research institution, TU welcomes students from many different faiths...
