Overview

The Sociology major may be combined with minors or second majors in just about any discipline. Some sociology majors are also part of the Honors Program. Sociology majors often choose to study abroad, where they may take credit hours toward their sociology degree. Opportunities for internships are available for upper-level majors in a variety of community organizations. The Sociology major offers both structure and flexibility. Students must take core subjects that emphasize methods, theory, and issues in the discipline. In addition, each student maps out a program of study that will satisfy the department’s requirements and provide the foundation for their career aspirations. The Bachelor of Science - Sociology program allows students to gain the ability to analyze society as a core component of anyone’s education and personal development.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

The University of Tulsa (TU) traces its roots to the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, a small boarding school in Muskogee, Indian Territory, which was founded in 1882. In 1894, the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church elevated the academy’s status and chartered it as Henry Kendall College, a name that honored the first general secretary of the Home Missions Board. The first classes in the new college were held on Sept. 12, 1894. Today, TU operates as an independent, nondenominational university. A top-rated research institution, TU welcomes students from many different faiths...
