Overview

Students who earn a degree in media studies learn to examine the role of media and communication in society. By selecting appropriate electives, media studies majors may specialize in any number of roles in professional fields and graduate school in media studies, public relations and advertising, journalism and storytelling, creative multimedia production and other fields. The Media Studies faculty seek to foster a critical commitment, expressed through many media (writing, public speaking, moving images, sound, etc.), to serve civic responsibilities and social progress. The University of Tulsa's courses develop analytic thought, clear writing, visual literacy, effective speaking and cultural, global awareness, which prepare students for graduate study, career success, and a good life. Students come to Media Studies from all kinds of backgrounds and are united by a common commitment to critically and creatively engage the world of media, to become more fluent communicators, critical analysts, storytellers, and creative directors, and to leave the world a better place for their efforts.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

The University of Tulsa (TU) traces its roots to the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, a small boarding school in Muskogee, Indian Territory, which was founded in 1882. In 1894, the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church elevated the academy’s status and chartered it as Henry Kendall College, a name that honored the first general secretary of the Home Missions Board. The first classes in the new college were held on Sept. 12, 1894. Today, TU operates as an independent, nondenominational university. A top-rated research institution, TU welcomes students from many different faiths...
