Overview

The Horticulture Certificate program at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) provides foundational training in the cultivation and management of plants, including vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, turfgrass, and ornamental species. The program prepares students for diverse roles across the horticulture industry, ranging from small‑scale operations to large commercial environments such as greenhouses, orchards, nurseries, golf courses, municipal parks, and landscaping firms. Students develop practical, hands‑on skills in plant care, propagation, soil management, and landscape maintenance, while gaining an understanding of industry practices and environmental conditions. The program is well‑suited for individuals with a strong interest in plant science who enjoy working outdoors and in varied weather conditions. An integral component of the program is a three‑week practicum, providing students with valuable industry experience and the opportunity to apply their skills in a real‑world setting. This experience supports career readiness and may lead to employment opportunities within the sector. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of roles, including positions in landscaping, garden centres, nurseries, greenhouses, parks, and horticultural supply companies, with opportunities to progress into supervisory or entrepreneurial roles with additional experience. Graduates may also choose to continue their studies in the Horticulture Management Diploma at TRU, which is designed for individuals who have completed a recognized one‑year horticulture certificate and can be pursued on a full‑time or part‑time basis, including distance learning options.
