Overview

Program Description Empower and help change the lives of students with special needs who are differently abled by pursuing your collaborative teacher degree from Troy University. When you become a collaborative teacher major, you have the option to choose grades K-6 or 6-12 as your focus. TROY’s undergraduate collaborative teacher program is fully accredited with a curriculum built on both Alabama standards for special education teachers and standards drafted by the Council for Exceptional Children. As you go through this program, you will spend more than 150 hours in a variety of classrooms working with students with special needs. You will complete course projects based on real-life teaching scenarios, and you will be given the opportunity to collaborate with practicing teachers and fellow students to develop job-related skills. There is a heavy emphasis on reading and math in our curriculum, which positions our graduates to be impactful in these two heavily emphasized academic areas in K-12 schools. This program’s faculty-to-student ratio averages approximately 1 to 15, which creates a more personal level for interaction with our dedicated and experienced faculty. The curriculum focuses on evidence-based practices to help those with special needs achieve success. It also will help develop your foundational skills associated with writing individual education plans (IEPs) and the understanding of special education laws.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
