Overview

The BA English Literature degree at the University of Chester offers an enriching exploration of a diverse range of literary works across different periods and genres, including prose, poetry, and drama. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of critical, theoretical, linguistic, and stylistic concepts, applying scholarly skills such as detailed bibliographic research to deepen their analysis. Through close, analytical reading, students will examine texts’ stylistic, expressive, formal, and rhetorical qualities, gaining insights into how literature reflects and influences society. They will explore the relationships between literary works and other cultural expressions, considering the social, historical, and cultural contexts in which texts were produced, received, and circulated. This approach fosters critical thinking about the role of literature in shaping societal values and ideas. Studying literature will enhance students’ ability to analyse and interpret textual information critically, ranging from artistic masterpieces to everyday language use. The course also encourages an understanding of historical perspectives on human personality, social structures, and consciousness, offering deep insights into how people have thought, lived, and interacted throughout history. Ultimately, it aims to cultivate reflective, analytical, and culturally aware individuals prepared for diverse career paths or further academic study.
