Overview

The MSc Bioinformatics programme is designed for graduates in biological sciences or computer science who are interested in applying computational approaches to challenges in biology and medicine. The course provides an interdisciplinary learning experience, combining computing, data analysis, and life sciences to equip students with the skills needed to address real-world problems. Students learn how to generate, process, and interpret biological sequence data, as well as apply innovative tools and techniques to analyse complex datasets. Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, and practical classes, including both computational and laboratory-based elements, with a strong emphasis on collaboration across scientific disciplines. The programme is supported by research-experienced academics, alongside contributions from professionals working in health services, agricultural research, and organisations such as the European Bioinformatics Institute. Selected wet-laboratory practicals provide insight into the scientific processes underpinning bioinformatics, enhancing students’ ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary environments. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and practical skills required to pursue careers as bioinformaticians across sectors including healthcare, biotechnology, and research. The full-time MSc is structured over one year and divided into three semesters. In the first semester, students develop foundational knowledge in either computer science or bioscience, depending on their prior background, and gain familiarity with bioinformatics databases and tools. The second semester introduces advanced topics such as machine learning and statistics, with options to specialise in areas such as Clinical Bioinformatics or Bioinformatics of Plant Disease. The final semester focuses on an independent research project, enabling students to apply their learning to a real-world research problem under academic supervision. Students typically undertake around 18 hours of on-campus learning per week, alongside independent study and preparation. Assessment methods are varied and include practical reports, data analysis, programming tasks, presentations, group projects, oral examinations, and a research thesis. Part-time study is available over two years, with the research project undertaken in the second year. An alternative MSc route with Advanced Research extends the research component into a second year, allowing for a more in-depth investigation supported by staged assessments and supervisory guidance.
