Overview

The Biomedical Science programme will be available as an option to students who have chosen the Bioscience route and after entry through LM123. After successful completion of Year 3 of Bioscience, students will have the option to transfer to the School of Medicine for the 4th and final year of their undergraduate degree. After successful completion of all modules, students will graduate with a BSc in Biomedical Science. By entering through LM123, students will begin with a broad, common first semester, covering specific modules in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics. The second and third years of the Bioscience program will provide a strong foundation in the understanding of biochemical systems and microbial technology. The tailored 4th-year Biomedical Science exit route equips students with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to understand the importance of collaborative partnerships between scientists and healthcare professionals, preparing them for a successful career in the field. Many graduates of the program go on to advance their careers in medical and scientific research by enrolling in further studies at the MSc and PhD levels. Several pursue Graduate Entry Medicine courses, either at the University of Limerick or at institutions overseas, while others choose to study Radiography or Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, many graduates have built successful careers in medical science, taking on roles such as Laboratory Technicians in hospitals. The degree in Biomedical Science provided the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to pursue a career in Medicine. The scientific principles and research skills taught throughout the course laid a strong foundation, which has been invaluable in the journey towards becoming a doctor.
